2007 is the 40th anniversary of the referendum that gave Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People citizenship. It is recognised by many to be the first stage of the reconciliation movement in Australia. Reconciliation Australia has been inviting and encouraging Australian organisations create and enact a "Reconciliation Action Plan". The overall purpose is to affect the disadvantage and reduced opportunity that Indigenous Australians suffer throughout their lives - such as the glaring indicator of the 17 year gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians born today. With the full endorsement of the Child and Adolescent Health Service Executive a working party (with representation from the Aboriginal community and across the health service) has produced a CAHS Reconciliation Action Plan. This has been developed using guidelines from Reconciliation Australia and the WA Health Aboriginal Cultural Respect - Implementation Framework.
