If your child has a life-threatening medical condition, call 000 and ask for an ambulance.

In an emergency situation, please go to your nearest hospital emergency department.

PCH Emergency Department

If your child has an urgent medical condition that doesn't require an ambulance, you can bring them to our Emergency Department (ED). Our ED provides emergency services for children up to the age of 16 (or up to the age of 18 years for pre-existing chronic conditions).

If there is another hospital emergency department closer to you, please take your child there. If your child needs to be transferred to PCH the staff will arrange this.

Mental Health clinical nurse specialists support mental health assessments in PCH's ED for children up to the age of 16 years.

WA Public Hospital Activity provides an up-to-date status of the emergency department in each of the metropolitan hospitals.

When you arrive 

When you arrive at the PCH ED, take a ticket from the kiosk. This helps patients be seen in order. Staff may call patients out of sequence for emergency reasons. 

You will be seen by a specialist emergency nurse who is highly skilled in conducting a quick assessment of the urgency of your child's condition. Once the assessment is complete, the nurse will allocate your child to one of five categories in the triage score. The triage score sorts the order in which patients are seen to ensure all children with life threatening illnesses or injuries receive help first.

What happens next 

You will be brought into ED. Clerical staff will check some details with you, including your child's Medicare number and your GP’s name. Your child will be seen by nursing and medical staff who will conduct a detailed assessment to determine what care your child needs.

The ED staff will not be able to give you a fixed waiting time to see a doctor as this will change depending on how unwell your child is, how many other patients there are and how unwell they are. All children will be seen in order of urgency, even if you have arrived in an ambulance, been seen by another doctor or have private health insurance.

What to bring to ED 

Your priority in an emergency is to get help. If possible, please bring the following items with you to ED:

  • your Medicare Card with your child's details
  • any other entitlement cards (health care, safety net)
  • your child's passport/health insurance details (overseas visitors/students)
  • private health insurance details (if you want your child to be admitted as a private patient)
  • a list of your child's current medications
  • any x-rays/ultrasounds/scans that may be related to your child's condition
  • the name of your child's General Practitioner (GP).


Location

Our Emergency Department (ED) is located at 15 Hospital Avenue in Nedlands, on the QEII Medical Centre site.

The emergency set-down area and ED is accessed off Hospital Avenue, at the western side of the hospital near the Main Entrance.
